David had a birthday last weekend and without us really knowing where it was coming from, Josh started talking about birthdays the week before. Specifically he kept referring to birthday cake. So instead of our normal casual no-so-much-of-a celebration, I busted out the candles, party hats and after an outside dinner, sang "Happy Birthday" loud enough for the neighbors to probably wonder why my parents never invested in singing lessons for me.
Josh was very excited about the whole thing. And yes, there is a reason why David is wearing a pink fluffy "1" birthday hat. Before we had kids, I had gotten some jungle pillow pets (before they were the thing) in hopes of a jungle themed nursery someday. On my birthday, I came home from work to find them all set up at the table around a bouquet of roses, wearing the party hats. David had gotten me the "1" hat because it was the only pink one he could find. So it's become our official birthday boy/girl hat now.Ben, we found out, does NOT like party hats. Even the sight of one headed in his direction caused instant tears of terror.
Josh was a bit concerned about David putting the candles into his mouth.
And he insisted on 'helping' to serve the birthday cake. A chocolate pudding cake with crushed oreos on top, if you must know.Once everyone but Josh lost the hats, Ben was a much happier baby. That and the extreme chocolatey cake helped appease him.
I'd say this cake got Josh's stamp of approval.
After dinner, Josh lost one of his toys down the slots on the deck. He was very distraught, so hero Daddy had to save the day.
The boys were very helpful. They of course know that the best assistance is given by stealing tools and being as close as possible. After the dramatic toy rescue, we spent the rest of the evening lounging outside. It was a fantastic start to a three day weekend of celebrating. On Saturday we had a BBQ to celebrate David's actual birthday with family, then on Sunday we went to my parent's place for Mother's Day and ate dinner yet again with four generations of family.
It was a pretty great way to start enjoying the nice weather that finally decided to grace western Oregon with its presence.

Cute! It's fun to see kids get into birthday celebrations. They get so excited! Too funny that Ben freaked out over the hats. That cake sounds delicious. I might need the recipe. YUM!
